The Importance of Dental Hygiene & Preventative Dentistry

Although not much is currently known about the relationship between poor dental health and other health problems, research indicates that there is a link between oral disease and health problems like diabetes, heart disease and stroke. In other words, to maintain a healthy life, it is important to have a healthy mouth, which means practicing proper dental hygiene and never underestimating the power of preventative dentistry.


Here are some tips for keeping your mouth happy and healthy:

  1. Keep your mouth clean by brushing and flossing every day.
  2. Check your mouth for signs of gum disease and oral cancer. Gum disease is commonly indicated by red, puffy, or sensitive gums, bleeding during brushing or flossing, and bad breath that won’t go away. Oral cancer may be indicated by sores that do not heal, numbness or tingling, white or red patches, and small lumps and thickening on the sides or bottom of your tongue, the floor or roof of your mouth, your gums, or the inside of your cheeks.
  3. Eat nutritious meals and avoid sugary snacks and drinks.
  4. Visit your dentist regularly to prevent dental problems from emerging or to detect problems before they worsen.
